The British Islands

Great Britain, the United Kingdom, England, the British Islands or the British Isles are often confused and perceived as one and the same. But in fact, each of those terms designates a different territory, as follows:
  • Great Britain consists of Scotland, England and Wales.
  • United Kingdom includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland is composed of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
  • British Isles/Islands are everything mentioned above, namely Scotland, England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
